When Mathias Mauer googled ‘overseas summer school experiences’, he was instantly drawn to a five week post-graduate finance course in Global Wealth Management at the University of Adelaide. “The timing was perfect, with my classes in Germany finishing at Christmas and summer school in Adelaide commencing in January. Travelling half way around the world for a study adventure only added to its appeal.”

On arrival in Adelaide, he wasn’t disappointed by the course or the welcome he received. “The support provided by the University was fantastic. On the first night, we had a welcome reception at a local hotel which gave us a chance to meet and get to know other students on the course, as well as try some Australian beers!”

Approachable and cooperative teaching staff, small class sizes and excellent facilities helped make the 6 day intensive course enjoyable and left plenty of free time for exploring Adelaide and the surrounding area.  “My most memorable experience was hiring a campervan and travelling into the Australian outback with two friends. I have never seen such vast, open spaces and we encountered plenty of native wildlife, such as kangaroos and emus along the way.  It really is a must for any overseas student!”

Although Mathias admits to knowing very little about Adelaide before his visit, he found it to be, “A diverse city with great museums and parks, lots of sporting events and last but not least: an amazing beach.” But it was the warmth of the locals that really impressed him, “Nearly everybody we met was friendly, open-minded and helpful.  This really made my time in Adelaide perfect.”

Now back in Frankfurt, Mathias hasn’t hesitated in recommending an Adelaide summer school experience to his friends. “It’s an opportunity to have a great study and travel experience in an amazing country! “I also point out to my friends that Adelaide is the most affordable city in Australia. With the value of the Euro at an all time low, this is certainly worth consideration.”
